Lack of marketing helped kill the Twinkie

When the economy gets tough one of the first things businessestry to do to cut expenses is

usually in marketing and advertising. The logic is that these intangibles are easy to do without. You already have customers so you need to focus on the actual business of producing the products or services.  What they forget is that studies have shown the businesses that come back fastest after an economic downturn are those that continued to advertise.

They also ignore the fact nothing has a shorter memory than your customers. There is a reason the saying is out of sight, out of mind.

Hostess never thought about that their customers are being bombarded with advertising messages and new products every day. It’s easy for them to be persuaded to try something new and it’s not till enough of them are gone that you start to feel the impact. Then you are left playing catch up and figuring out where did they go and how can you get them back.

If you think about the snack market and how many times you see advertising on television, radio, billboard and online for these products, then think about the last time you saw a commercial for a Twinkie.

Hostess has been so mismanaged and bogged down with changes in top executives and labor disputes they forgot all about the customers. Now too late they realize their customers have forgotten about them and moved on to either other treats or have changed their palates and added healthy snacks to their diet.

Will you miss the Twinkie if Hostess can’t find a buyer or have you already found a replacement snack?
